This post is a part of the 2015 New Beer Every Day Beer Diary Challenge, #ottbeerdiary. Over the course of 2015, I will be trying a new beer every day. Please read the background in the link above, and enjoy reading about the most recently tasted beers below. Day 212: July 31, 2015
Diary entry:
All in all, this was a pretty rough week. Between an increase in work, a lack of sleep, and just general stress, I must say, I was happy to cut out late Friday afternoon when the invite came for happy hour at Van Moll again.
I had to finish a few last meetings before I could join the others, and was promptly greeted with a glass of Spontanbasil by Brouwerij Lindemans (6% Lambic). Talk about an intense basil flavor! This was pretty good!
Followed this up with:
08|01 Stout Export Strength by Brew By Numbers (8% Foreign Export Stout) – Chocolate caramel aroma. Bitter coffee and chocolate flavor. Not as intense as 02 or flavorful as 03.
Old Growth Imperial Stout by Caldera Brewing Company (8.8% American Imperial / Double Stout) – Getting more alcohol and bitter than dark roast flavors. mine was 3rd pour from bottle. First pour seemed more flavorful. Weird.
Aphotic Imperial Porter (2014) by High Water Brewing (9.3% Imperial / Double Porter) – Rather nice. Don’t taste the 9.3%. Not too much darkness in the flavor though.
And then, finishing off with the beer of the day…
The Beer:
Name: Black Hole Sun (Dmitri)
Style: Russian Imperial Stout
Producer: Black Market Brewing Co.
Alcohol content: 15.0%
Bottle size: 22 fl. oz.
Purchased from: Van Moll in Eindhoven, the Netherlands
Dmitri (known as Black Hole Sun at the time) by Black Market Brewing Co. Oh that smell. Could it have the tootsie roll effect? The flavor. Oaked? Vanilla. Caramel. Dark and a little sweet. Oh, so close! Slight tartness on the aftertaste. This is quite a lovely beer. Glad someone else paid for it though. (€24!)
Commercial Description (from Untappd):
Because of the gravitational pull of Black Hole Sun, no light can escape it, resulting in a complete and utter absence of light when you pour a glass of our Super High Gravity Russian Imperial Stout. Our blend of malts and hops gives Black Hole Sun amazing complexity of flavors, with amazingly low alcohol warming for a beer of this magnitude. Brewed with 100% barley and zero added sugar, Black Hole Sun will make a fine evening ompanion. Enjoy Black Hole Sun in a snifter as you would a fine brandy. Let it warm a bit to enjoy its entire magnitude of flavor complexities.
