This post is a part of the 2015 New Beer Every Day Beer Diary Challenge, #ottbeerdiary. Over the course of 2015, I will be trying a new beer every day. Please read the background in the link above, and enjoy reading about the most recently tasted beers below. If you’d like to join the challenge as well, let me know in the comments below, and be sure to check out Grown-up Travel Guide and his #grownupbeerdiary, where Andy Higgs came up with the diary format in use below. Day 125: May 5, 2015
Diary entry:
Day two of our three day fam trip of the La Selva (The Forest) region of Costa Brava.
A quick (but delicious) breakfast at Ca Nan Villa, in the Montseny Natural Park, and then we began our explorations for the day.
Our first stop of the morning was at Castell de Montsoriu, perched high up on a hill overlooking the entire valley below, including Hostalric, where we were yesterday. The views from Montsoriu are outstanding, and on a clear day, you can see all the way to Barcelona and the Mediterranean Sea. Unfortunately, we had some haze today and could not see either.
At the end of our tour of Montsoriu we were treated to a lovely lunch spread prepared by Can Mariano in Breda, Spain, in the valley below the castle. A very nice selection of local dishes, all prepared beautifully, and served up in the former great hall of the castell.
From Castell de Montsoriu, we returned the bus for the ride to Sant Hilari Sacalm, where we took a short walk around the town, following by a fun electric bike ride (burricleta) down to the natural springs of Font Picant located just outside town. Our guides from El Racó d’en Serrallonga provided us with a charcuterie plate provided by local butcher “Can Cisquet”, along with pan con tomate and some drinks.
Finally off to the Vilar Rural Sant Hilari where our lodging and dinner for the evening were provided. But first, an opportunity to do some zip lining! This was a first for me, but I made it through the course with no problems.
The Beer:
Name: Blat
Style: American Pale Wheat Ale
Producer: Cervesa del Montseny
Alcohol content: 3.8%
Bottle size: 0.33l
Purchased from: Provided to us by the guys at El Racó d’en Serrallonga in Sant Hilari Sacalm.
Today was definitely the day for Montseny beers! In total I got to try three new beers from Montseny, Lupulus at Castell de Montsoriu, and Blat and Malta at El Racó d’en Serrallonga (also with a Ceriux Rubia by Cervecera Artesana Riojana)
The Blat rally hit the spot. We had just finished our bike ride, and it was a pretty warm day, so a nice, cold wheat ale really was the perfect beer for the occasion. And it was a very good wheat ale too. Fruity, wheaty flavors. That hint of banana that they combine into that I like in a hefeweizen.
