This post is a part of the 2015 New Beer Every Day Beer Diary Challenge, #ottbeerdiary. Over the course of 2015, I will be trying a new beer every day. Please read the background in the link above, and enjoy reading about the most recently tasted beers below. If you’d like to join the challenge as well, let me know in the comments below, and be sure to check out Grown-up Travel Guide and his #grownupbeerdiary, where Andy Higgs came up with the diary format in use below. You can catch up on all of our posts as part of the challenge under the tag ottbeerdiary.
From December 1 through December 24, I’m going to try to use a Christmas Beer for each day of Advent as part of my #ottadvent15 2015 Advent Calendar. Follow along with the tag ottadvent15.
Day 347: December 13, 2015
Diary entry:
Had a nice opportunity to sleep in, and enjoy a morning on the couch. A few cups of coffee, a few blog posts and some social media. A nice morning.
For the afternoon, I had plans for a local beer festival down in Eindhoven, the Bier & Big festival.
Thirteen breweries, over 40 beers to choose from over the course of the day. And some delicious roast pork!
I tried the following:
Mexican Porter by LOC Brewery and Katjelam – 7.5% Smoked Porter – Cloudy color. Looks chocolatey. But the taste, all sour. Very sour. I like it, but perhaps too sour for some. There are dark flavors below. I had one of the first pours from the keg. Later pours I saw people drinking were much darker and less cloudy.
Jack The RIPA by Cervesa Guineu – 7.2% American IPA – Big, smooth, creamy head. Excellent flavor. Citrus aroma and flavor. Lovely!
Pumpkin Ale by Lux Brewery – 7.0% Pumpkin Ale – Much better than I even expected. Not too sweet (though a bit). Nice blend of 6 (or so) spices. Good color
Winter Gorilla by Sori Brewing – 7.0% Baltic Porter – Oak chips, Cointreau, vanilla, cold brewed espresso. Nice blend of aroma and flavors.
Punakuub by Õllenaut – 7.0% Winter Red Ale – Fruity and spicy. Bubble gum on the first hit, then bitterness strikes. But the fruit remains. Interesting how distinct the flavors remain.
Zuster Agatha Houtgerijpt (Winter 2015) by Muifelbrouwerij – 10.5% Quadrupel – Slight barrel aroma. Ok flavor. Pretty good.
Nuit Noire 2015 by 100 Watt Stadsbrouwerij Eindhoven – 8.2% Winterbier – Pretty good flavor. Pairs well with the pig head they just put in front of us.
Wunderbar by Van Moll – 4.3% Berliner Weisse – A light, but still sour Berliner Weisse.
Mr. Petroli B. A. by Cervesa Guineu – 9.5% Imperial Stout – Some barrel, but still a lot of dark coffee and even dark fruit. God dark bitterness. Definitely worth stoping over for this one!
Lord Nelson by LOC Brewery – 6.2% IPA – Nelson, Citra and Columbus hops. Nice bitterness. Very nice IPA.
Lucky Nr. 7 by Oldskool Brewery – 7.0% Smoothie Weisse – From bottle. Bitter. Malty. Lots of carbonation on this bottle.
Turbahunt by Õllenaut – 11.2% Peated Ale – Smokey/Peaty and sweet. Too sweet. Fruity.
Puuraidur by Õllenaut – 9.2% Double IPA – Malty and bitter. Nice bitter. A good beer. I prefer less malty though on my DIPA.
Other breweries present included Brouwerij de Mouterij, Dusseldorfer Alt Bier Bar, LMNOP Brewing, and Gebrouwen Door Vrouwen. I tried to get one from the Mouterij but the line was too long. The other three I had previously tried all of the beers they had on offer today.
After all of these, though, I still hadn’t had a Christmas beer, so had to go home for my beer of the day…
The Beer:
Name: Kerstvuur (2014)
Style: Blonde Ale
Producer: Brouwerij Pirlot
Alcohol content: 9.0%
Bottle size: 0.33 l
Purchased from: Bierhandel Willems & Zoon in Grobbendonk, Belgium
Kerstvuur (2014) by Brouwerij Pirlot. 9% ABV in a 33cl bottle. A blonde ale, on the sour side! Quite a surprise. A very pleasant surprise.
