Day 191: July 10, 2015
Diary entry:
Friday!
Fridays are especially quiet this time of year, as people are preparing for their holidays, and we actually get some decent weather.
I was finishing up my last to-do list items at work, when I received a message from a colleague that they were heading over to Van Moll in Eindhoven for an after-work drink to start the weekend, so I decided to tag along. It’s Friday after all, and I think I accomplished quite a bit this week. Impressive being my first week back and all…
The trip to Van Moll turned out to be a bit of a bottle share, as the four of us decided to share up a number of bottles from off their pretty extensive bottle list.
Some of the sampled beers included:
Doerak by Van Moll: From the bottle and also from the tap. Better in bottle than draft to me. More bitter.
French IPA by Jopen: Very soft bitterness compared to the Doerak.
Spontangooseberry by Mikkeller: Sour, and the underlying fruitiness coming afterwards.
BA Dragon Tips by Buxton Brewery: Very peaty. A bit more than my taste. But well done.
Leon by Omnipollo: Mild but distinct bitterness. Not true bitter. Not mild. But a well done in between.
Blubus Maximus by The Wild Beer Co: A wee bit underwhelming. Ok. Very underwhelming. Smells like a balloon.
Hoxton Stout by Redchurch Brewery: Lovely coffee notes. This is very nice.
Old Ford Export Stout by Redchurch Brewery: Gets the slight nod over the Hoxton. A wee bit more smooth and balanced.
Meneer De Uil – Clynelish BA by Het Uiltje: Approaching that ever elusive Tootsie Roll. So close. Wee bit coconut.
Roundhouse Kick by CREW Republic: Ok. A wee bit of a manure smell. Bitter and dark. But not powerful.
CC:Porter by Het Uiltje: Meh. I would not order this one. Some people may like. But not me.
8-Ball Rye IPA by Beavertown: Enjoyable beer, another solid Beavertown beer.
125 Barley Wine (brandy Barrel Aged For 12 Months) by Marble Beers: A nice finisher. A very good barley wine.
But, the top of the heap is today’s beer of the day…
The Beer:
Name: Potemkin
Style: Russian Imperial Stout
Producer: Naparbier
Alcohol content: 12.0%
Bottle size: 0.33l
Purchased from: Van Moll in Eindhoven.
Poured very thick, viscosity of engine oil. Very black. A flavor of star anise that reminded me of some of my favorite licorice. Beautiful dark flavors mixed in as well. Really liked this one.
