This post is a part of the 2015 New Beer Every Day Beer Diary Challenge, #ottbeerdiary. Over the course of 2015, I will be trying a new beer every day. Please read the background in the link above, and enjoy reading about the most recently tasted beers below. If you’d like to join the challenge as well, let me know in the comments below, and be sure to check out Grown-up Travel Guide and his #grownupbeerdiary, where Andy Higgs came up with the diary format in use below. Day 52: February 21, 2015
Diary entry:
What do you do on a Saturday when you find yourself bored to tears with nothing to do?
Was torn between a couple thoughts. There’s a Belgian beer festival down in Sohier, Belgium, but it’s a two-and-a-half hour drive one way, and all the beers are full bottles, so the number of beers to sample would be too limited for the full session. And then the return trip.
The other option was a leisurely drive through the Dutch countryside up to Haarlem, and finally a visit to Jopenkerk, one of the breweries I’ve been meaning to visit for quite a while. I decided on option 2.
And of course, while sitting at Jopen, I receive a tip that Het Uiltje is opening their new craft beer bar the same night! So naturally, my day trip turned into an overnight, found a decent cheap hotel right between Jopen and Het Uiltje, and took part in the opening night of Het Uiltje as well. Some great beers from Het Uiltje, but already chose this beer from Jopen as my beer of the day…
The Beer:
Name: The Rye(ght) Thing
Style: Russian Imperial Stout
Producer: Jopen
Alcohol content: 10.0%
Bottle size: 0.33l
Purchased from: Jopenkerk in Haarlem, the Netherlands
The Rye(ght) Thing is a limited edition Miltonduff Barrel Aged Rye Russian Imperial Stout by Jopen. Instant hit with the rye and the whisky barrel, followed by the dark bitterness of chocolate and coffee. Then back to the whisky. 10% ABV.
