Couldn't agree more! It is sad that some people have the impression that the sommelier is just out to get them to buy the most expensive bottle on the wine list. And all the wine experts I know much prefer someone to ask rather than pretend they know what they are doing and order a wine that doesn't match, and wind up hating their meal. And, in the case of many of the high-end "world's best" tasting menus we've done, one of the best highlights is learning about the wines the sommelier pairs with each course. I'm yet to have a sommelier make a bad pairing or sell me on a ridiculously marked-up wine.

The best advice is if you do not know anything about wine, ask! No one will look at you strange for asking about a wine or a pairing. Most servers or sommeliers (if lucky enough to dine where one resides, there are only 230 master sommeliers in the world) will actually appreciate it since it will allow them to showcase their knowledge on the subject.
