Craft Beer in Tokyo is on the rise, and Tokyo is becoming on of the top craft beer destinations in the world. Here's some top craft beer bars in Tokyo.

Craft Beer in Tokyo is on the rise, and Tokyo is fast becoming one of the top craft beer destinations in the world. We’ve been to Tokyo many times over the years, and where initially there was a large number of bars all serving only the basic lagers of the large Japanese breweries like Asahi, Kirin, and Sapporo, there is now a large selection of bars serving beers from Japanese craft breweries, as well as craft breweries from around the world. Many of these also serve quite decent food as well.

Here are some of the top craft beer bars in Tokyo, which I tried to break out by neighborhood.

This is the first Tokyo taproom for Baird Brewing Company of Numazu. Mostly serving their own beers, but a large selection to choose from, including limited releases and seasonal offerings. Plenty of seating is available, and a decent selection of craft pizza and other food offerings as well.

In addition to the bars mentioned above, one place I would recommend visiting to find Japanese craft beers would be the various antenna stores found throughout Tokyo. There is an antenna store for each region of Japan located here in the capital, each of which carries a variety of local products from the prefecture. While not every store carried craft beers, we managed to pick up a nice selection of beers from most of the prefecture antenna stores we visited.

Many of these stores are located in the Ginza / Yurakcho neighborhoods, with 14 in the Tokyo Koutsu Kaikan building near Yurakcho station alone!

One of our favorite cities to visit in Europe is Bruges, or Brugge, Belgium. Bruges is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, with a historic center that is second to none. The center’s narrow, winding streets and canals bring you through a fairy tale city, with centuries old buildings and squares. The market square is one of the most picturesque in Europe, with the famous Belfort that dates back to the 12th century. Bruges is also home to Michaelangelo’s Madonna of Bruges in the Church of Our Lady as well as the Basilica of the Holy Blood, containing a relic said to contain the blood of Jesus.

Aside from the beautiful architecture and loads of history, Bruges is also one of the tastiest cities in Europe. The city boasts an excellent beer scene, wonderful food, and some of the best chocolate in the world. Here are some of our tastiest tips for visiting Bruges.

Where to Eat in Bruges

Bruges has hundreds of restaurants, including a number of Michelin-starred restaurants in and around the city. While the legendary three-star De Karmeliet has closed for normal service, remaining for special events only, chef Geert Van Hecke still runs restaurant Zet’joe and bistro Refter alongside the original location.

Bistro Refter in Bruges, Belgium

For a more casual dinner, check out Restaurant Cambrinus, where you can get traditional Belgian cuisine prepared with and paired with their large selection of Belgian beers.

Local meats plate at Cambrinus in Brugge, Belgium

For a fun dessert, stop by Go.fre, where you can grab a delicious Belgian waffle on a stick. You can get your waffle dipped in a variety of chocolates, and coated in a number of different toppings. Get it topped fresh, or buy some prepackaged waffles to take home as a souvenir.

And no visit will be complete without buying some chocolate to bring home to all of your friends and family. And there’s no better chocolate shop in Bruges than Chocolatier Dumon. You won’t be disappointed!

Chocolatier Dumon, Bruges, Belgium

Where to Drink Beer in Bruges

Brugge has quite a lot of beer history, and there are plenty of beer-related activities in the city.

In the south of the old city, near the Minnewater, you’ll find the historic Huisbrouwerij De Halve Maan, where the local Straffe Hendrik and Brugse Zot beers are brewed today. Here you can tour the old brewery, as well as enjoy traditional Belgian food and the house-brewed beers.

Brouwerij De Halve Maan in Brugge, Belgium

As you head from the Minnewater back towards the center, you’ll find the BeerWall, where you can see hundreds of Belgian beers on display, and stop in the shop to pick up some of your favorite bottles.

In the market square you can find the Bruges Beer Museum and Experience, with interactive exhibits on the history of beer in the city, as well as tastings of beers from nearby breweries like Rodenbach.

And right next to the Church of the Holy Blood, you’ll find the Struise Beershop, where you can buy the latest offerings from one of Belgium’s most creative breweries.

Struise Brewers shop in Brugge, Belgium

If you’d like to sample some of Belgium’s best beers, stop by some of the great beer cafes in the city, such as De Garre, Cafe Rose Red, and ‘t Brugs Beertje.

Cafe Rose Red, Brugge, Belgium

Where to Stay in Bruges

After a day of tasting your way through the city, you’ll need a comfortable hotel in the city to lay your head at night. One of our favorite hotels in Bruges is the Grand Hotel Casselbergh. I stayed there during the European Beer Bloggers Conference in August 2015, and truly enjoyed my stay there, especially the great breakfast!

Grand Hotel Casselbergh in Bruges, Belgium

When and How to visit Bruges

Bruges is one of those cities that is great to visit year-round. It’s many parks and canals are lovely to wander through on a beautiful summer evening, and winter brings a fairy tail charm to the city, with the Markt turned into a Christmas market and ice skating rink. Shops are open year-round, though many do close for at least a week in the late summer for their holiday.

If you are traveling to Bruges, unless you are renting a car, you will likely be arriving by train. the train station is located just south of the main walled city center, and is a nice walk, through the Minnewater and into the center.

A visit to 3 Fonteinen Brewery during the Open Beer Days. 3 Fonteinen is one of the premier brewers of Lambic beers such as Geuze and Kriek.

From August 30 through September 3, 2012, the 3 Fonteinen Brewery near Brussels held their annual open beer days. This is a rare opportunity to visit one of the premier brewers of the local specialty lambic beers. The event includes free tours of the brewery in Dutch, French and English, a chance to taste some of their products, and most importantly, a chance to buy some of their special, old bottles not usually available for purchase in the shop. You may also get a chance to meet Armand and Lydie Debelder, the owners and brewer of the 3 Fonteinen beers.

Available for tasting at lat year’s event were the 3 Fonteinen Lambic, Oude Geuze, Oude Kriek, and Faro as well as the Beersel Blond, Lager and Zwet.be. I had to partake of a Faro here, as they don’t bottle this for normal sale. The Faro seems to be usually available only in the 3 Fonteinen Restaurant located next door. Faro is a lambic blended with caramel and candied sugar. It retains the normal sourness of a lambic, but with a nice sweetness that makes it quite smooth. These beers are usually short lived, only three to four weeks in the bottle, as the added sugars result in very active fermentation that could make the bottle explode!

The 2013 Open Beer Days were held from Thursday, September 5 through Monday, September 9, 2013. Much of their offerings were same as from 2012, however there was less to choose from.

The 2014 Open Beer Days were held from Thursday, September 4 through Monday, September 8, 2014. Much less to choose from than 2013 even. They were considering a focus on special beer-tasting dinners throughout the year, but I’m not sure if those continued. Hoping for more selection in 2015…

The 2015 Open Beer Days will be held from Thursday, September 3 through Monday, September 7, 2015. If you’re looking to pick up a few of the rare older bottles, try to get there on Thursday or Friday, as quantities are often limited and they run out of choice vintages fast!

If you’re driving to 3 Fonteinen, they’re off Exit 19 on the R0 Ring Brussels.

By the time this post goes live, I should already be setting out on what promises to be an interesting — and fattening — 1.5 weeks. The team of Our Tasty Travels is headed out on a pretty epic European foodie adventure, which may be just as fun as those unmissable UK road trips, in conjunction with our upcoming Croatian culinary cruise with Katarina Line on October 16.

Some of the countries we are passing through one or both of us have visited on numerous occasions, so we are likely to just drive straight through those. I want to concentrate on exploring a few of the new countries we will be passing through like Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Albania. However, I’ve set a rule in place – if we cross a country line, we MUST try something local to eat and drink. And with me, that probably means bringing a bottle of wine, beer, or liquor home as well. But if other people were to spend more time in such countries, they can try packages like that Dubrovnik sunset cruise.

As it stands now, our route (dependent on weather obviously) is as follows:

Netherlands (starting point)

Cologne, Germany

Plzen, Czech Republic

Vienna, Austria

Bratislava, Slovakia

Budapest, Hungary

Timisoara, Romania

Belgrade, Serbia

Sofia, Bulgaria

Skopje, Macedonia

Kosovo

Shkodra, Albania

Herceg Novi, Montenegro

Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Split Croatia

Opatija, Croatia (where our #kvarnerfood cruise embarks)

Koper, Slovenia

Venice, Italy

San Marino

Vaduz, Liechtenstein

Zurich, Switzerland

Strasbourg, France

Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

Liege, Belgium

The Netherlands (home)

Total: 5,638 km, 64 hours driving time, 23 countries.

This is quite a lofty goal, especially knowing how side tracked I get by destinations, scenery, and food. Not to mention how much I hate mornings…absolutely, intensely loathe mornings. Have I mentioned how much I despise mornings?? If anything, I should get pretty familiar with coffee in every country we spend the night in.

If you have any local recommendations on must try food and drink, please let me know! Follow us on Facebook and on Twitter using the hashtag #TastyRT13. Some of the countries we are passing through are not part of our roaming service on the Dutch phones so we may not update until settling in the hotel at night.

During our time in Bologna, Italy for BlogVille, we were lucky to find our visit coincided with a local Craft Beer Festival. Had to visit!

When I think about Italy, usually great food and wine are the first things that come into my mind. However, being the inquisitive soul that I am, I wanted to find out if there is good craft beer as well.

Last week, Erin and I were in Bologna, Italy for the BlogVille project, sharing an apartment with a great group of travel bloggers from the US (Oregon), Australia, and Venezuela. Up until one of the last nights, my search for beer had not been very thorough. I do have to admit that I got caught up in the tradition of enjoying some of the wines of Emilia Romagna with our meals, and we’d been too tired most nights to do much in the way of going out to look for a pub to enjoy a beer in the evening. I did see a few beers around that I want to go back and try, and managed to try a couple craft beers in Ferrara at the Eco + Food Festival we attended, so I was hopeful that I’d have a chance to experience the beer culture in Bologna before we had to leave.

Apologize in advance for the lack of quality photos — Erin had the good camera with her as she was scheduled to do an interview with a local chef!

Sadly, on Monday, our initial group of six was breaking up, as Bethany and Ted from twoOregonians and Michael from Time Travel Turtle were leaving to continue on their journeys. As Sunday was to be our last night together, and hearing there was a craft beer festival in town, we decided to head out and see what was on offer. Michael, Bianca from Nomadiba and I wandered down to the university area of town, to where the Festival Dei Birrai Eretici was being held in a collection of pubs and cafes on the via Mascarella.

Twenty-seven beers in total as part of the festival, and fourteen of them were from Italy, and none of them named Peroni!

I was very happy to see the high concentration of Italian craft beers as part of the festival, with more than half of the total selection coming from Italy. And the styles of beers presented by Italian craft brewers showed a nice diversity.

Birrificio Del Ducato Via Emilia

Unfortunately, the Bravo Caffe’ was closed already when we arrived, so we did not get to try the Revelation Cat/Mikkeller Cream Ale. We passed by Moustache and Cantina Bentivoglio but they were quiet and empty, and we wanted to be more in a crowd. We found L’Ortica, where not only was there a nice mix of people, but we also managed to snag a table out on the patio where we settled in for the next few hours.

Hardknott Cool Fusion

Over the course of the evening, I tried the Via Emilia, Cool Fusion, Old Chestnut, Flora Sambuco and Wake Up Dead. I wanted to try a few of the other Italian beers, but two of the taps were on rotation, and neither Saison was available, the AFO available instead (which I had already tried), and the Vùdù and Forum Gallorum being off the tap in favor of the Cool Fusion. AFO and Bad King John also found their way to the table, and I did take a small taste of the Bad King John when it arrived.

I loved the beers I did try, especially the Old Chestnut, Flora Sambuco and Cool Fusion. The Wake Up Dead was good, but had a bit too much alcohol taste for me. According to Bianca, this would be a great beer for marinating meat with.

Flora Sambuco and Wake Up Dead

Next door to L’Ortica is Modo and we discovered it was quite interesting as well — nice crowd and also a good beer selection – offering a one-two punch for a night out in Bologna. I would definitely suggest making 24 and 26 Via Mascarella your places to stop when you’re out for a beer. And I would definitely suggest giving the Italian craft beer selections a chance, as they are quite good, and show that there is definitely a growing beer community in Italy. Granted, not as strong as the wine community, but certainly not something to ignore for the future.

Queen's Day is a national holiday in the Netherlands, celebrated April 30. Brett arrived in Eindoven April 29th for the final preparations.

Tonight and tomorrow will be perhaps the biggest party of the year in Eindhoven, even more crowded than Carnaval, and perhaps only rivaled by those days when the local football team wins the championship. Last time I was in town for Queen’s Day I could hardly move, the crowds of orange so vast it took hours just to walk a few hundred meters.

The weather seems a little more threatening this year than it did that year, but the city is gearing up for quite a party nonetheless.

I took a walk through all the major squares in the center of town this afternoon to see what was being prepared for this year’s festivities. All of the major local beers seemed to be well represented, with numerous stages and every variety of food truck to be found, representing all of the traditional options, from trucks offering selections of French Fries / Krokets / and Frikkendel, to hamburgers, bratwurst, mini egg rolls, pizza, and every other food that pairs well with the ever present beers.

I hope the rain holds off.

My recent experience with the Blonde Ale offering from Echigo Beer of Japan.

Continuing on with my recent theme of beers I picked up from the local City Super, tonight I cracked open another brew from Japan that I had never tried before. This one was bought the same night as the Ginga-Kogen from last week, and had been sitting in the fridge for a while, but the date on the bottom of the can indicated that it should be good still for another few months.

Tonight’s beer, the Echigo Blonde Ale, came from Land Brauerie Echigo-Bräu from Nigata, Japan. The Blonde comes in a white 350ml can with gold and red print and a ram’s head in the center. This is a classic Blonde Ale / Golden Ale, with 5% ABV. The beer poured with a deep, golden color, almost amber. It started with a nice head, but that very quickly disappeared, leaving no trace it was ever there. The beer also did not offer up much in the way of an aroma. Perhaps this was due to the beer coming straight from the fridge, as I definitely feel I served this one way too cold.

Echigo Blonde Ale

The first tastes of the beer did not amount to much, again, not a surprise due to the temperature. Initially, the carbonation itself was all I felt on my taste buds, without any actual flavors. I was drinking this along with some home made kushikatsu (Japanese-style, deep-fried pork skewers), and do have to admit, after a minute or two, the beer, chilled in beer cellar cooling, seemed to go very well with the panko-crumb coating and tonkatsu sauce. At this point, the flavors started to come out a bit, with some malty, fruity sweetness. Nothing special, but drinkable.

Would I go go out of my way to order this beer if I saw it on a menu? Probably not. But this one was enough that I’d take the time to try some other offerings from the brewery, and wouldn’t pass up another in a pinch. I would still gladly choose this beer over most of the large breweries, especially if I have the time to let it sit a few minutes to reach the proper temperature.
