Craft Beer in Tokyo is on the rise, and Tokyo is becoming on of the top craft beer destinations in the world. Here's some top craft beer bars in Tokyo.

Tokyo may be famous for sushi, ramen, and whisky, but its craft beer scene has quietly become one of the best in Asia. From tiny neighborhood taprooms pouring local brews to award-winning breweries and beer-focused restaurants, there’s never been a better time to explore Tokyo one pint at a time. Whether you’re searching for hazy IPAs, Japanese lagers, or hidden bars locals love, here’s where we think you should start.

Before You Visit Tokyo’s Craft Beer Bars

One of the things we love about Tokyo’s craft beer scene is that it rewards curiosity. Some of our favorite discoveries have happened simply by wandering into a neighborhood taproom or asking a bartender for a recommendation. Keep these tips in mind before you head out, and you’ll be ready to enjoy the experience like a local.

If you’re wondering what to order once you arrive, our guide to The Art of Beer and Food Pairing can help you choose beers that complement everything from yakitori and ramen to sushi and other Japanese favorites.

Many taprooms don’t open until late afternoon.

Cover charges are uncommon but not unheard of.

Most bars accept credit cards, though carrying a little cash is still a good idea.

Tap lists change frequently, so don’t be surprised if a beer you were hoping to try has rotated out.

Ask for recommendations—bartenders are usually proud to introduce visitors to breweries from around Japan.

Above all, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Tokyo’s craft beer community is welcoming, and bartenders are often happy to recommend local breweries or help you discover a style you’ve never tried before.

Updated July 2026 to include new recommendations, recently opened taprooms, and the latest changes to Tokyo’s craft beer scene.

There is an antenna store for each region of Japan located here in the capital, each of which carries a variety of local products from the prefecture. While not every store carried craft beers, we managed to pick up a nice selection of beers from most of the prefecture antenna stores we visited.

Frequently Asked Questions About Craft Beer in Tokyo

Whether you’re visiting Tokyo for the first time or planning a return trip, these are some of the questions travelers ask most often about finding and enjoying craft beer in Japan’s capital.

Is Tokyo good for craft beer?
Absolutely. Tokyo is home to one of Asia’s most exciting craft beer scenes, with hundreds of bars, taprooms, breweries, and bottle shops spread across the city. You’ll find everything from neighborhood pubs pouring Japanese microbrews to internationally recognized breweries serving award-winning IPAs, lagers, stouts, saisons, and experimental seasonal releases.

What Japanese craft beers should I try in Tokyo?
Tokyo is one of the best places to sample beers from breweries across Japan. Keep an eye out for breweries like Coedo, Baird Beer, Uchu Brewing, West Coast Brewing, Kyoto Brewing, and Yo-Ho Brewing. Since most taprooms rotate their selections regularly, asking the bartender for a local recommendation is often the best way to discover something new.

Are craft beer bars in Tokyo expensive?
Craft beer typically costs more than standard Japanese lagers such as Asahi or Sapporo. Expect to pay roughly ¥800 to ¥1,500 for most pints, depending on the brewery, beer style, and venue. Many bars also offer tasting flights or smaller pours, making it easy to sample several different beers during one visit.

Do Tokyo craft beer bars serve food?
Many do. Some specialize in pizza, burgers, barbecue, or gastropub fare, while others focus primarily on drinks with only a few light snacks available. If you’re planning dinner, it’s worth checking the menu before you visit. Fortunately, Tokyo’s neighborhoods are filled with outstanding restaurants, making it easy to pair great beer with an equally memorable meal.

Do I need reservations for Tokyo craft beer bars?
Most neighborhood taprooms and beer bars welcome walk-in guests, especially on weekdays.
